From Zero to Machine Learning Hero: Bioimaging Training at IIMCB

From 19 to 21 October 2026, the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (IIMCB) hosted a three-day training course, “Bioimaging Data Analysis: From Zero to Machine Learning Hero,” organised as part of Task 2.4 – RACE Events.
The training focused on modern approaches to bioimage analysis, combining theoretical insights with hands-on exercises. Participants explored tools such as Napari, QuPath and Ilastik, gaining practical skills in image processing, segmentation and machine learning applications in biological research.
The course was led by experts from all three partner institutions: Sebastian Munck and Benjamin Pavie from VIB (Belgium), Laura Murphy and Ann Wheeler from the University of Edinburgh (UK), and Tomasz Węgierski from IIMCB (Poland). The instructors shared their expertise in bioimaging and computational image analysis, guiding participants through practical workflows and advanced techniques.
The programme also covered deep learning methods, FAIR imaging principles and ethical considerations in scientific image analysis. A highlight of the training was the “Bring Your Own Data” session, which allowed participants to address their own research challenges and work on real datasets with expert guidance.
The event supported the RACE project’s objectives of strengthening research competencies, fostering knowledge exchange between partner institutions and advancing the use of cutting-edge technologies in molecular and cell biology.
